Increasing the efficiency, frequency, and speed of rail defect detection can reduce maintenance costs improve sustainability railways. The non-contact eddy current (EC) system be operated along with a railcar for detecting flaws. Even if EC utilized identification characterization, commercial devices are not sufficient classification on rails by providing highly sensitive signals post-processing. In this study, we established an efficient expandable inspection verified its capability different signals. integrated hardware software measurement was firstly applied to detect notched cracks in steel samples crack depths angles. measured voltage analog inputs from sensor were acquired processed fast Fourier transformation (FFT) algorithm LabVIEW platform. real-time impedance then obtained transferring normalized plane plot. showed adequate sensitivity efficiency changes angles during movement. A comparative case study field conducted examine feasibility types actual defects. experimental analysis results demonstrate that could possibly used non-destructive classification. enhanced (especially subsurface cracks) post-processing technique further contribute improving rail-life sustainability.
